Key takeaways

  • A profit boost multiplies the winnings, not the stake: boosted decimal odds = 1 + (odds − 1) × (1 + boost).
  • Boosts are worth more on longer odds, as long as you can find a tight hedge on the other side.
  • Hedging a typical 25% to 50% boost locks in a small but reliable profit. Several boosts a week adds up.
  • Same-game parlay boosts are usually hard to hedge and often still negative EV because of the parlay margin.

Log into almost any US sportsbook and you’ll find a profit boost: a token that increases the winnings on your next bet by 20%, 30%, 50%, sometimes 100%. There are also odds boosts (sometimes called specials), where the book posts an inflated price on a specific outcome.

Both can be profitable. This guide covers the math and how to choose between hedging a boost and letting it ride.

How a profit boost changes the odds

A profit boost applies to profit only. Your stake comes back the same either way.

Boosted decimal odds d′ = 1 + (d − 1) × (1 + boost)
Original odds Boost Boosted odds
−150 50% +100
+150 25% +188
+250 50% +375
+400 30% +520
+200 100% +400

Because the boost multiplies profit, it adds more on longer odds. A 50% boost on −150 adds 33 cents of profit per dollar; on +250 it adds $1.25.

Hedging a boost

Once you know the boosted odds, hedging is just like any other two-sided bet:

Hedge stake H = S × d′ ÷ d₂ Locked profit = S × (d′ − 1) − H

Example: 50% boost on +250

You have a 50% profit boost with a $50 maximum stake. A team is +250 at the boosting book, so boosted it becomes +375 (4.75). The best price on the other side is −260 (1.385) at another book.

  • Hedge stake: 50 × 4.75 ÷ 1.385 = $171.53
  • Locked profit: 50 × 3.75 − 171.53 = $15.97 whichever side wins

Example: same boost on a favorite

Use the same boost on a −150 favorite instead. Boosted, it’s +100 (2.00). The other side is +130 (2.30) at best.

  • Hedge stake: 50 × 2.00 ÷ 2.30 = $43.48
  • Locked profit: $6.52

Same token, less than half the profit. That’s why boost-matching tools search for longer prices where the hedge is still tight.

Hedge or let it ride?

A hedge locks in value but costs you the margin on the hedge bet. Leaving the boost unhedged keeps that margin in your favor but exposes you to the result.

Take the +250 example and suppose a devigged sharp line says the team’s fair odds are +240 (29.4%).

Unhedged EV = 50 × (0.294 × 4.75 − 1) ≈ +$19.85 Hedged: +$15.97 guaranteed

Unhedged is worth about $4 more on average, but you either win $187.50 or lose $50. Hedging costs $4 of EV to remove that swing.

A reasonable approach:

  • Hedge when your bankroll is small, you’re claiming a large boost, or you want steady results.
  • Let it ride when the stake is small relative to your bankroll and the boosted price is clearly +EV against a sharp line. Over hundreds of boosts, the extra EV adds up.

Odds boosts and specials

Odds boosts are different: instead of a token you apply, the sportsbook posts a boosted price on a specific outcome, such as “Chiefs and Eagles both win, boosted from +180 to +225.”

  • Many are parlays or same-game parlays, where the “boost” still leaves the price below fair. Compare against the fair price of the combination before assuming value.
  • Straight-bet specials (a single moneyline or player prop at an inflated price) are often genuinely +EV and sometimes hedgeable.
  • Max stakes are usually low, $10 to $50.

Same-game parlay boosts

SGP boosts are the most common and usually the weakest. Same-game parlays carry high margins, and the legs are correlated, so there’s no single “other side” to hedge. A 25% boost on an SGP with a 20%+ margin can still leave you with a negative EV bet.

Unless you can price the correlation properly, treat SGP boosts as entertainment or skip them.

Getting the most out of boosts

  • Use every boost token before it expires, even if it’s small. Each one is free value.
  • Aim for longer odds within whatever market the boost allows.
  • Compare hedge prices across every book you have. The hedge book is often where the profit is won or lost.
  • Check the max stake. The locked profit scales with it.

Finding the best market for each boost across a dozen books is tedious by hand. A boost matcher scans games and books to find the market where the boosted price beats the best hedge by the most. ProfitDuel’s Boost Matcher is built for exactly this.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 100% profit boost the same as doubling the odds?

It doubles the profit, not the decimal odds. A 100% boost on +200 turns a $100 bet’s $200 profit into $400, so the odds become +400.

Why do sportsbooks give out so many boosts?

Boosts are cheap marketing. They cap the stake, often steer customers into parlays with high margins, and keep people opening the app daily. Hedged carefully, you can collect their value without the parlay margin.

Can I boost a bet that's already an arbitrage?

If the rules allow, yes, and the result is an even bigger locked profit. In practice, boosts are usually restricted to certain markets, so you work with whatever the boost allows.
